Young man dies from 'banger' incident |
According to reports and Facebook posts from people who knew him, the young man above identified as Wasiu Apesin, reportedly died after a banger was thrown towards the mosque where he had been worshipping.
The banger was said to have brought down an electric cable near the Temidayo central mosque, which led to his electrocution.
Wasiu who was an undergraduate of the Olabisi Onabanjo University, had even changed his Facebook profile picture around 4:33PM on December 31, before his untimely death in the early hours of January 1.
According to a post shared by a Facebook user identified as Ajetunmobi Ridwan Olawale, this is what happened:
"New Year tragedy. N100 bangers (firecrackers) has brought unforgettable sorrow to a family in this New Year.
This Olabisi Onabanjo University student, Wasiu Apesin, crossed over to 2017 but died in the midnight after he was electrocuted in the premises of Temidayo Central Mosque in Mushin, where he had gone for Tahjud (vigil).
A banger thrown towards the mosque brought down an electric cable on this promising Statistics student and killed him.
The people throwing bangers were only celebrating, but the firecrackers have wreaked havoc in a family. Let's be careful how we celebrate.
R.I.P. Wasiu Apesin!"
Another friend confirmed the death saying:
